GROWING is an adaptive reuse live/work residence designed to support single mom entrepreneurs and small-business owners, particularly those managing online shops. Recognizing the unique challenges these women face in balancing parenthood with career aspirations, GROWING provides a nurturing environment where mothers can simultaneously care for their children and pursue personal and professional growth. Equipped with essential amenities such as daycare services and spacious production areas, this space aims to alleviate the demands of single motherhood while fostering collaboration, empowerment, and a sense of community among residents.

A key feature of the space is its two dynamic, vertical nets that contribute both functional and aesthetic elements to the building. They are shaped like two inverted pyramids connected at their tips (resembling a sand timer). The first net spans from the basement daycare room up to the second level. Centrally located in the daycare, this net is designed for children to climb and play, allowing them to greet residents and visitors entering the building. By integrating play into the daily environment, this net serves as both a playful feature for the children and a social connection point for mothers and their visitors.
The second net, larger in scale and extending from the first level through the roof, offers a biophilic element to the space. Unlike the first, this net is not for climbing; instead, it is adorned with vertically growing vines that create a natural, green wall effect. This feature is designed to enhance air quality and promote the physical and mental well-being of the residents. The net also serves as a sculptural focal point, contributing to the building’s aesthetic and providing a sense of connection to nature. Where this net passes through the roof, an open skylight, cut to match the triangular shape of the net, allows sunlight to pour into the space, bringing warmth and an additional light source to the interior.
By incorporating elements like these, GROWING promotes a nurturing, inclusive, and innovative environment where single moms can thrive personally and professionally.
